Optomap

What is the Optomap?

Optomap is a type of retinal imaging technology used by optometrists and ophthalmologists to examine the back of the eye, also known as the retina. It uses a laser and digital camera to capture a high-resolution, panoramic image of the retina. The Optomap imaging process is quick, non-invasive, and typically takes less than a minute to complete. It is done by sitting in front of a camera, and looking into a device that projects a laser beam into the eye. The laser beams reflects back from the retina and captured by the camera and creates a detailed image of the retina.

The Optomap image allows the optician to view the retina in great detail, including the blood vessels, nerves, and other structures. This can help detect a wide range of eye conditions, including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and retinal detachment.

The Optomap technology is also useful for monitoring the progression of these conditions over time, as well as identifying potential problems early on. This can lead to early diagnosis, and the potential for more effective treatment

Optomap is a valuable diagnostic tool for eye care professionals and can be used in addition to traditional examination methods like visual acuity testing, eye chart examination and dilated eye exam.

Please note this machine is only available in our Corringham and Chelmsford practices.
